This pair are an interesting story, they came to me by way of my daughter. Brandy first of all was a stray in her neighborhood. Sue heard the neighbors talking about calling the Pound so she snatched her up and gave her a home. Thus earning a reputation for helping lost and helpless animals! Sue even had to get her back yard fenced to do so. Brandy was a very small puppy when she was taken in but grew to be a medium size brown dog. Nothing special just a sweet disposition.

Bandit was found by one of the neighborhood kids after being thrown out of a car window in front of the elementary school. Bandit was just a small puppy but she had the perfect markings of a German Shepherd but in miniature. She was so well behaved that if you put her in a tub for a bath and said “Stay there” she would just sit and wait for you to come back. That doesn’t happen very often! The parents would not let the children have a dog so they begged Sue to take her, and she like me could not resist.

When Sue decided to move to Orlando and she put her house on the market she needed a home for both Brandy and Bandit, so where could she go, why of course, Mom always had room for one or two more. At the time I had four of my own dogs, three small parrots and a cat. They all got along surprisingly well. They lived with me for several years until I decided I needed to sell the big house and move to something smaller with less expense. I advertised and found homes for the three birds, cat and three of the dogs.

Brandy and Bandit were two of the three that I felt needed new homes. It is more difficult to find homes and say goodbye then it is to have they die. You worry that the homes you choose will be the right ones for them.

Brandy seemed to be allergic to something in my yard as she lost a lot of her fur and we never found out what it was. She was adopted by a woman who was moving to Arkansas who felt Brandy would do better in that climate. She wrote me a letter from Brandy saying she was very happy there and all her fur was back. That put me somewhat at ease.

Bandit was adopted by a neighbor a few miles way. I have always been so sorry I let her go because she was so well behaved and beautifully marked. I do feel that she was happy in her new home as well. They seemed like very nice people and were so excited to have her. They had small children and she would have done very well in that situation. It was hard to separate them.

Brandy on left and Bandit loved to play together. The carpets or scatter rugs were always in a pile somewhere in the room. They would not stay in place for five minutes. It was a fun game for them, watching me straighten up and see how fast they could mess them up again.

Date and Origin: traditionally attributed to Anatolia (modern-day south-western Turkey). Newly attributed by me to early 15th c. northern Trebizond area (on the Black Sea in modern-day Turkey), or possibly from the Nachivan region of Greater Armenia (now part of Azerbaijan)

Carpet notes: Traditionally attributed to Anatolia, I now have reason to think this fragment was manufactured by Christian weavers in what is now the northern Turkish region stretching from Trebizond to modern Azerbaijan, an area of Christian weavers traditionally a part of Greater Armenia and vanished Byzantium. This region was visited and lived in by Italian Dominican and Franciscan missionaries from 1250 onward, until around 1500. The region was heavily threatened by the Muslim incursions in the 15th century, and largely lost to the west when it was subsumed by the fall of Trebizond in 1461 to the Ottomans.

Often misleadingly called a Crivelli carpet because of its similarity to the carpets in paintings by Crivelli (of 1482 ,Frankfurt) and 1486 ,National Gallery, London), this important fragment incorporates not only the last animal/bird motifs found in early Renaissance paintings (see Crivelli's Annunciation of 1486), but the roundel medallion on the lower right is similar to those found in Pinturrichio's paintings in the Piccolomini Library in Siena od 1305. We also have the 8-point star motif on the lower left that is typically Armenian, as is the scorpion-motif , middle range, which is found in the San Marco altarpiece of 1440.
